In this post of Oceans and continents class 6 notes, students will have an understanding of all important concept given in the chapter 2 Oceans and Continents class 6 social science. It will boost the confidence of students after reading this post.
Class 6 Social Science Chapter 2 Notes
Most of the earth surface is covered with water almost three-fourth of the Earth surface that’s why, when we see Earth from outer space, it appears mostly blue. The earth is uniquely known as the blue planet.
The Distribution of Water and Land on the Earth
The ocean contains most of the water available on the earth which is salty and unfit for consumption.
Fresh water resources are found in glaciers, rivers ,lakes, in the atmosphere and groudwater.
Oceans- The largest water bodies on the globe are called oceans.
There are five oceans in the world which are according to the size are as follows 1.Pacific Ocean(largest),.Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, Southern ocean and Arctic Ocean(smallest).
These oceans do not follow any boundaries and constantly flow across different oceans sustaining arrange diversity of marine life.
Marine life — Plants and animal species that are found in the oceans and seas.
Flora– The plant life of a particular region or a period of time .
The Marine Flora includes tiny plants called algae and all kinds of seaweeds.
Fauna -The animal life of a particular region or period of time.
The Marine fauna consist of thousands of a species of colourful fish dolphins Wales and countless deep sea creatures.
Ocean and continents play an important role in shaping the climate of the earth and affects all aspects of life including all plants and animals and human life too
Oceans and Disasters
Storms
Violent events with extreme rainfall or very strong winds such as cyclones which can cause wide spread damage to coastal regions of the world.
Tsunami
A tsunami is a natural disaster that originate in ocean. It is a huge and powerful wave the generally caused by strong earthquake or a volcanic eruption at the bottom of the ocean.
Continents
A large and continuous expansion of land is called a continent.
It covers a little over 1/4th of the earth.
Large part of the continents lies in Northern hemisphere
In the initial stage there were four continents which are categorised and North America and South America were considered to be two continents but it is considered as single landmass now.
Similarly ,Europe ,Asia and Africa were considered as single landmass and Antarctica and Australia are other countinents.Thereafter Africa was separated from Eurasia then they became 5 continents. After this they became 6 continents as is North America and South America world divided into two continents and in last, there is a list of 7 continents which is widely adopted and used.

–Greenland is the largest island in the world.
Andaman & Nicobar islands in Bay of Bengal and Lakshadweep islands in the Arabian Sea are the two major groups of Islands in India.
Oceans and Life
Oceans and continents are important parts of the environment as the effect most aspect of our life.
- The water cycle circulation takes place between oceans and continents that supports agriculture.
- half of the words oxygen is produced by oceans flora that’s they are called the planets’ lungs.
- it regulates the climate and sustaining life on earth.
- Oceans are used by the traders to migrate to other regions to conduct military campaigns and the source of food as fish.
- It enriches the culture of coastal people all over the world
